Meet the Acton Family Network Board Members

Alycen Nigro – Chair
My family, including a 5 and a 4 year old, moved to Acton from Connecticut in late 2008. Our first weekend in town happened to be the same weekend as the AFN Halloween Party and, as they say, the rest is history. For my family, AFN has been a great resource for friends, support, information and fun. My husband and I have felt a bit like AFN cheerleaders as we spread the word about how much we have enjoyed being AFN members among our friends both in the community and outside of Acton. In an effort to help AFN, I joined the board as the membership chair in the summer of 2009, and am now happy to be serving as the chair of AFN. For us, finding Acton and AFN has been great for our family.

Amy Barber – Treasurer / Membership
I am a proud mother of two children, Helaina (5) and Miles (3). We moved to Acton in 2004 from New Jersey. After having my daughter in 2005, I immediately joined AFN and began attending various AFN/First Connection sponsored lectures for first time mom's. From pre-natal classes to two year old eating habit lectures, AFN has educated my family and I. I look forward to their monthly newsletter. Now I felt it was time to give back and volunteer my time to this organization. We are grateful for the friends we've made and the memories we share through many AFN community events. It is a great way to be a part of our community.

Kate Bones – Fundraising
I am a part-time working mom with three year old twins, Luke and Madeleine. We moved to Acton in the summer of 2008 from Somerville, Massachusetts...after a long search for a community that was down-to-earth, family-oriented, and commutable. Not knowing anyone else in the area, we started participating in AFN-sponsored events and eventually I began volunteering for various ad-hoc AFN activities. I was so impressed with all that AFN offers to the families of Acton and so, in the spring of 2009, began working with the board on fundraising and public relations. AFN provides many events and activities for families with young children and I am excited to be able to contribute to this wonderful organization.

Jessie Busiek – Playgroups Coordinator
We moved to Acton from Boston in 2004. I am a mom to two little girls, age 6 and 19 months. I recently started back to work, very part-time on Tuesdays and Fridays. Through AFN, I have met wonderful people and learned so much about what is going on in our community. I am really excited to now be a part of the Board doing playgroups.

Valerie Fang – Webmaster

Lauren Friedman – Secretary
I just joined the AFN board in the fall of '09 after being a member since we moved to Acton in 2004. By day, I'm a social worker at a local vocational high school, by night I'm a Mom to a 6 year old girl and a 2 year old boy. So I have a unique perspective being a full-time working Mom most of the day and year, but a stay at home Mom in the afternoons and summers. I started in AFN by participating in the playgroups, Mom's Nights Out and the Babysitting Co-op, where we have met some of our closest friends in town. I am so grateful for the community and the wonderful folks we've connected with and resources we've found through AFN that I wanted to give back by joining the Board. AFN and Acton are great places to be-there's something for everyone!

Mira Greenland – Mom's Night Out
I am a part-time working mom to three children under the age of 5. When I moved to Acton from California, I sought out Acton Family Network immediately. I was placed in a playgroup with 6 other mothers with similar aged children. I immediately connected with the group which made my transition here much easier. Since then there have been many more connections our family has made through AFN events and my experience on the board. I have AFN to thank for the majority of the amazing community of friends we've built since we've moved here.

Jen Izzo – Newsletter Editor
I am the mother of three wonderful, energetic little boys - ages 1, 3 and 6. I also work out of the house 4 days per week as an attorney. AFN has played a big role in helping to make Acton home. I started out by joining a playgroup, and then proceeded to join a babysitting coop, and then finally the board. This is the fourth position I've held on the board.

Maureen Jones – Book Group
My family has been a member of AFN for 10 years, I am a past Chair, and I have three children, ages 12, 9 and 6.

Laura Krieger – Family Events Coordinator
My family moved to Acton three years ago and I've been excited ever since about finally being able to stay home with two boys (4.5 & 2.5), largely due to all the AFN activities and opportunities to connect with other families. We joined a playgroup and added the monthly AFN daytime activities, which keep us quite busy! We took a hiatus from the babysitting coops while my little one was having a hard time staying with anyone, but are now involved with coop IV. Our playgroup moms also joined and he's agreed that he just might stay with them (especially since they are also among Mom's favorite friends, and he's not invited to our card games). I'm excited to join the board and start to help other families connect with each other and enjoy the area. Although I grew up nearby, I either don't remember, or didn't have many of the activities that are now available for families with young kids, so please contact me with any ideas you might have!

Heather Lammey – Fundraising

Maureen Leo – Community Service
We moved to Acton four years ago and then moved again within Acton this past year. I am a mother to three busy and noisy boys under the age of four. I also have a very part time job teaching at a law school and do limited case work as a lawyer in child welfare cases. I joined AFN after we moved to Acton to meet other families in town with young children. Our family has enjoyed countless adventures with AFN including day trips and playgroups. As we don't have any family babysitting options nearby, we've also been particularly grateful for the babysitting co-op. I run the Community Service events and hope to see you at one soon!

Sharon Metzger – Babysitting Coop Membership Coordinator
I am a part-time work-at-home mom to two boys, both Douglas students as of 2010. We have lived in Acton since 2004, and connected with AFN shortly before moving from Arlington. Since we knew no one in town other than our immediate neighbors, AFN turned out to be an invaluable resource. We became "charter members" of babysitting coop 3, and as the other families had kids close to our kids' ages, we connected quickly. I've enjoyed serving AFN as the newsletter editor and membership chair in past years, and am staying on the board with the babysitting coops as my kids get more involved in school, scouts, etc. Acton is a great community, and we are grateful for the connections AFN has enabled.

Steve Nigro – Dad & Me / Dad's Night Out

Megan Pesce – First Connections Liaison
I am a full time Mom to two boys, ages 3 & 6. We moved to Acton from Melrose in 2006 and through an AFN organized playgroup, met my first group of friends in Acton. I have my own Interior Design business, MK DESIGN, and write a monthly column for the local edition of the website Suzy Said. I also take classes at the Boston Architectural College. I love my position at first connections because it is such a wonderful way to share ideas and experiences with other local family networks in the area. In addition to first connections, during the past two years, I have had the amazing opportunity to run the AFN Halloween Party. It's an incredible time for both kids and adults and a great way to meet new AFN members.

Olympia Wheeler – Mom & Me
Residents since the fall of 2002, my husband and I moved to Acton from the south shore and immediately fell in love with the town and its surroundings. Though the commute to the city can be a bit hectic at times (I work full time at a financial institution) we couldn't consider living anywhere else. Our boys, a 5 year old and 1 year old twins, love the outdoors and Acton is full of wonderful trails to explore. AFN has also given us a great opportunity to meet other families and forge great friendships.
